December 02, 2020

This quilt was inspired by a really unique fabric by Anna Maria Horner that combined bold vertical and diagonal stripes. I saw the fabric in a store in California in November 2019 and started the quilt as part of my March 2020 FMM30 Quilt-Along. Then COVID hit.

I worked on the blocks and the assembly on and off through the summer of 2020. I was going for a random arrangement that would play with the diagonals. But after looking at it for a while on my design board, it seemed to me to lack focus. That's when I decided to piece back into the design some of the strips I had cut off when I squared up the blocks. The diamonds that formed gave the design the focus it needed and reminded me of "god's eye" ornaments. Meanwhile, COVID was raging all around me. I finally finished in November 2020.

All of the Free-Motion Mastery in a Month quilts are made with the daily practice blocks that you pre-quilt as you work through the book. I love that this quilt show that just because you start with 10" blocks doesn't mean you end up with a boring quilt. By cutting up the blocks in unique ways, you create a really spectacular result!
